First-day pupils join celebrations

Two first-day pupils at Parkvale School, Lillian Black, and Barney Hill – both now 85 – cut the giant cake, decorated with fresh fruit, at the Hastings school’s 75th anniversary celebrations today. Mrs Black (nee Cook) and Mr Hill both started at Parkvale on February 4, 1919. It was a special occasion for Mr Hill, as his father, the late Tom Hill, built the original brick Parkvale School. The anniversary functions are being attended by more than 1100 people this weekend.
