Newspaper Article 1994 – Forty new apple, pear varieties

Forty new apple, pear varieties

Forty new apple and pear varieties will be displayed to pipfruit growers tomorrow.

The Hawke’s Bay new varieties committee, a sub-committee of the of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Association that works closely with the Apple and Pear Marketing Board is staging the day in conjunction with pipfruit breeders and the board.

Committee chairwoman Louise Wake said the occasion would be the only opportunity many growers had to see fruit from new varieties they were planting.

This year’s field day would be split into four 15-minute workshops dealing with pears, early to mid-season apples, mid-to-late season apples and GS (Gala-Splendour cross) series apples.

Two sessions of an hour each would begin at 11am and 1pm at the Apple and Pear Marketing Board’s Williams St laboratory. Displays would be in place from 11am until 3pm.
