Hastings centenarian dies

Hastings centenarian Mary Boyle died on Saturday, after nearly three years in the Cornwall Park rest-home. She was 101.

She said at the time of her 100th birthday on June 22, 1993, that she “didn’t feel 100, only 21” and enjoyed a telegram from the Queen that day.

Mrs Boyle was born in Wellington as Isabella Mary Eames, and was raised in Pahiatua where her father was a dentist.

It was there she met her future husband William Boyle when he returned from the First World War.

After they married they moved first to a farm in the Whareratas, near Morere and later at Nuhaka, where Mr Boyle also had a butchery business.

They retired to Hastings 41 years ago and Mr Boyle died in 1971.

Mrs Boyle, whose funeral was held early this afternoon, is survived by her three daughters and two sons, 21 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren
