Napier jeweller dies, 64

One of Napier’s most respected jewellers, Gordon Chapman-Taylor, died on Monday.

Mr Chapman-Taylor, who was born in Hastings, would have been 65 next week.

He was a 21-year-old when he moved from Upper Hutt after completing a jeweller’s apprenticeship and went into business with his brother Robin in Napier.

Mr Chapman-Taylor retired from the business in October last year after 45 years. The two brothers were well respected in the trade and left behind many loyal customers.

Mr Chapman-Taylor met his wife Bev at his brother’s wedding, where she was a bridesmaid for her sister, Shirley, who married Robin.

As well as being an outdoorsman who was keen on hunting, Mr Chapman-Taylor was also keen on water-skiing.

Even though he had been diagnosed with cancer, he continued to water-ski on the Clive river up until very recently.

Mr Chapman-Taylor is survived by his wife Bev, son Kim, daughter Donna and granddaughter Amy.

The funeral was held at the Clive Water-ski Club, Clive, today.
