Projects end, jobless up

An increase in the number of Hastings unemployed last month was caused by the completion of Taskforce Green projects after this year’s hailstorm, Hastings Employment Service manager Ranui Toatoa said yesterday.

There were 2833 unemployed in April compared with 2764 in March – an increase of 69.

Mr Toatoa said the task force schemes, which began after the March 2 hailstorm, ran from four to 13 weeks and many had now finished.

In Napier, unemployment fell from 3564 to 3514, a drop of 50.

Waipukurau unemployment also fell – down 67. Wairoa lost 57 from its jobless list.

Nationally, the number of registered unemployed dropped last month to 186,449. This compares with 195,221 out of work in March.

The figures, released by the Employment Service, are an official measure of unemployment. Figures do not include those who have chosen not to register with the Employment Service and exclude holiday workers.
