Newspaper Article 1994 – Tomoana’s old steam engine

Tomoana’s old steam engine, which shunted railway wagons at the works until 1982, went to Auckland a couple of years ago to the care of the Mainline Steam Trust in Parnell.

The trust had leased the 30-tonne English shunting engine with an undertaking to restore it to its former glory and make it available if required in Hawke’s Bay for special promotions.

The Bagnall tank engine, which has its water tank over the driving wheels, was bought new by Tomoana’s owners, Nelsons NZ Ltd, in 1932.

It was replaced in 1982 by two diesel shunters.

There to see it go to Auckland in November, 1992, was John Francois (pictured). He had driven the little red engine at Tomoana for 14 years.
