60 years together

Jean and Cliff Sims celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary today hardly believing that it has been 60 years together.

Mrs Sims was 16 when Mr Sims walked into the Methodist church dance in Arrowtown for a social when he was gold-mining there.

‘‘I thought, hello, he’s for me,” said Mrs Sims, 79.

“She’s the cement that’s held us together,” 81-year-old Mr Sims said.

Mrs [Mr] Sims was stationed at Waipawa for seven years after joining the police force in 1937. He was taken prisoner in Italy during the Second World War.

The couple have five children, 1[0] grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Family members who live nearby celebrated with the couple yesterday and a family dinner was planned for today.

They received congratulations from the Queen, and the Governor-General Dame Cath Tizard, on their milestone.
