Newspaper Article 1995 – Agreed to disagree

Agreed to disagree

Jim and Kathleen Cable, Hastings, who agreed to disagree throughout their 60-year marriage, celebrate the anniversay [anniversary] today.

Mr Cable is an Anglican. Mrs Cable is a Methodist. They have attended their respective churches throughout their marriage.

“It hasn’t mattered. Children make the marriage. There’s no use saying we don’t argue – we do – we agreed to disagree. We’ve done pretty well over the 60 years,” Mr Cable said.

They were married in the Waipawa Methodist Church in 1935, after finally getting permission from their parents to marry after a six-year courtship. They were both 23 years old.

They have four daughters, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren who helped them celebrate the occasion yesterday.
