Newspaper Article 1995 – Cinema Closes

Cinema closes

The Westend Theatre closed on Saturday leaving Hastings temporarily without a cinema – the first time in 60 years.

Hastings residents will have to wait until the new Village 4 multiplex opens in the former State Theatre on August 18.

Hawke’s Bay Multiplex Cinemas Ltd Operations general manager Graeme Edwards said he wanted a break between the old and the new.

The Westend Theatre has been bought by the Assembly of God church.

Mr Edwards said the Westend staff were needed for training at the multiplex- which will seat 720 people in four cinemas.
