Master Sportsperson

SHEEP dog trialist, Charlie Anderton, Waipukurau, was awarded 1996 Master Sportsperson of the Year in the Central Hawke’s Bay District Sportsperson of the Year competition in October.

Charlie was nominated by the Takapau Sheep Dog Trial Club where he is a past president and a life member.

He has been a top dog trial competitor for 50 years and during that time has won several New Zealand and Island titles.

In 1975 he achieved the rare distinction of winning all four events at the Kumeroa trials with four different dogs.

This year, at age 75, Charlie is still competing at top level, qualifying three dogs to compete in the New Zealand championships and gaining an amazing total of 82 qualifying points.

Only six points are needed to qualify one dog to compete at national level.
