‘Meat’ at Mayfair

New look and new name for butchery

When the going gets tough, the tough start thinking laterally, which is why farmers Marcus and Tessa Averill have bought the butcher’s shop in the Mayfair shopping centre, Hastings.

Now named Tender Meats, the shop has a fresh new look in green and white. The traditional window display of meat has gone, replaced by ducks, sunflowers and Wooden Spoon mustards and sauces.

“Farming’s hard work,” says Marcus “and it’s hard to get any more out of the land, so we saw this as a way of marketing our product.”

The product is straight from the farm, lean and green with no hormones. The beef is hung for ten days, the lamb for five, to ensure maximum tenderness and flavour, and the meat is available fresh, wrapped or vacuum packed.

Behind the Tender Meats’ counter is Phil, the previous owner of the shop, who’s happy to cut the meat the way you like it – steak a bit thicker, fat trimmed, or a special order for a special occasion – an hour’s notice is usually enough. The Tender Meats team plans to introduce a weekly special recipe, which will be Tessa’s department.

Farm fresh meat at a better price with personal service and advice on cooking methods – that’s what Phil, Marcus and Tessa offer at Tender Meats.

And what do the neighbours think? Wayne at Liquorland: Excellent – we need new shops, and Hastings needs to support the locals. It’s good to see the confidence of a local business going ahead.

Maria at Muffs Pantry: They’ve brightened it up and it looks a lot nicer. Hopefully it’ll attract more customers to Mayfair.

Mike and Karen at Village Fresh: It’s wonderful to see someone making such an effort to revitalise the shopping centre.
