Much to see in 100 years

Arriving in Dannevirke and fording five rivers to Waitahora, milking cows, swapping steel-rimmed gig wheels for rubber, hurrying past houses containing swaggers, and a honeymoon drive over the Napier-Taupo road in a four-cylinder Chevrolet are just some of the memories of Dannevirke’s latest centenarian, Rachael MacDairmid Mills.

Mrs Mills celebrated her birthday late last month, having lived in Dannevirke for 95 years.

Born Rachael White in Scotland, she arrived in Auckland on the Paparoa, aged four, later marrying Kenneth Mander Mills.

She has seen Halley’s Comet twice and witnessed the Mount Ruapehu and Mt Ngaruhoe [Ngauruhoe] eruptions in 1947 and the 1950s.

Mrs Mills has three children living, nine grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
