Hastings’ oldest resident celebrates birthday No. 108

Hawke’s Bay’s veteran of veterans turned 108 yesterday.

Born in 1891, Marjory Monteith, nee Crooks, came to New Zealand from Scotland as a 20-year-old woman in 1911.

She married Hubert Monteith and spent most of her life in Poverty Bay and Hastings, Hawke’s Bay. The couple had two children, Jean and Stuart, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Undisputed as Hastings’ oldest resident, Marjory Monteith was once thought to be the oldest person in New Zealand.

Subsequent publicity has revealed there are at least two countrywomen her senior.
