Central celebrates 125th birthday

More than 500 past and present pupils of Central School, Hastings, celebrated the school’s 125th anniversary last weekend.

The school which began life on July 5, 1875, where the Kmart carpark now is, was originally a small, rough-sawn building.

It was replaced with a three-room school on its present site on the corner of Southampton Street and Karamu Road south, in 1879.
