Newspaper Article 2001 – Reflections

Reflections

The former Tomoana Freezing Works will always be important in Hastings’ history.

The buildings were constructed in 1883. On March 31, 1884, the first shipment of 9000 sheep carcases was sent to UK on the sailing ship Turakina.

The freezing capacity was quickly doubled and in 1891, the machinery department was remodelled – all original machines scrapped. The freezing building was also remodelled and capacity increased sixfold.

These photographs of the Tomoana works and staff were taken from the book Hastings – the Hub of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand.
