Hereworth’s 75th Jubilee
People are coming from all over the country to share in the celebration of Hereworth’s 75th Jubilee on Saturday, 23 November.
That is the report from the event organiser Maria Gourlie. “We sent out an initial flyer a couple of months ago,” she told us, “and we have had more than 570 expressions of interest so far. They have come in from all over New Zealand plus a few from overseas – Australia, the UK and California. The ages of those interested ranges all the way up to one 100 year old!”
Hereworth began its history in 1882 as Heretaunga School in Hastings. It was moved to its present site in 1913 and in 1927, after an amalgamation with Hurworth Prep School from Wanganui, it became Hereworth.
“We will be sending out registration forms in the next two weeks, so if anyone who wishes to come doesn’t receive one they should contact the school office as soon as possible.
“The planned events are based around the traditional Hereworth vs. Huntley School [Marton] sporting fixtures in cricket and tennis. A reunion buffet lunch will be held in a marquee on the main field, and decade photos will be taken in the afternoon. We will feature a display of memorabilia which will be open throughout the Jubilee weekend. Many pieces and photographs have already been received – but we would love to have more – again, if people can help they should contact the school office.
“From the comments that we have already received, many of the old pupils are going to particularly enjoy visiting their old haunts and classrooms – there have been many changes over the years.
“The day finishes with a formal Jubilee dinner in the marquee from 6.30pm, and there will be a Chapel service at 10.30 on Sunday morning.”
The day before the jubilee the Parents Association are hosting a Golf Tournament at the Bridge Pa Golf Course, which has already attracted huge interest.
