Inspector’s job for ex-Hastings man

Senior Hastings police officer John Fairley has been appointed head of road policing in Hawke’s Bay and East Coast.

Replacing Inspector Dave Cummins, Senior Sergeant Fairley will become Inspector Fairley when he takes up the position in the Eastern Police District headquarters in Napier on January 13.

The job of district road policing and operational services manager includes additional roles with the district armed offender squad, search and rescue, dog handling section and emergency management.

An early focus will be the establishment of a new Tactical Alcohol Group by the start of April.

Mr Fairley, 37, is a former Hastings Boys’ High School pupil who joined the police in 1985, and has served his career in the Hastings area, Hamilton and rural Waikato.

Mr Cummins, a former chief traffic officer with the Napier City Traffic Department before its integration with the Ministry of Transport, held the position from the MOT-Police merger in 1992 until his retirement last year.
