Newspaper Article 2005 – Fire destroys bridge pier

Fire destroys Nuhaka bridge pier

A pier on the collapsed Nuhaka River rail bridge was destroyed by fire in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters found the pier well alight and “flames shooting about 10 metres above the bridge” about 4.45am.

Nuhaka chief fire officer Bruce McCulloch said the blaze was thought to have been a result of workers using gas cutting equipment to cut bolts on the pier early yesterday afternoon.

The bridge collapsed on May 6, sending a 60-tonne crane and container plunging into the river and closing the line.

The pier destroyed by the blaze was one of those being replaced by contractors.
