Newspaper Article 2005 – Now the bridge is worm-proof

Now the bridge is worm-proof

Nuhaka now has a teredo worm-proof rail bridge and the Napier-Gisborne railway is open.

A pier on the bridge collapsed 10 weeks ago, sending a rail crane sent to repair the bridge and rail carriages tumbling into the Nuhaka River.

Wooden piles supporting the bridge had been weakened by the teredo worm, the “termite of the sea”.

Three of the bridge’s five piers were replaced and are now supported by steel cylinders, which are to be filled with concrete.

The Government has allocated $5 million to repair the bridge, retrieve and repair or replace the crane.
