Knot ties councils tighter

The oft-discussed amalgamation of Hawke’s Bay’s local bodies took a massive step forward at the weekend.

Hastings Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers tied the knot with regional councillor Ewan McGregor on their Hautope property on Saturday before 100 friends and family who thought they were there to celebrate Mr McGregor’s 60th birthday.

“We saw it as a way of bringing about amalgamation,” Ms Bowers said this morning, “Someone’s got to start the ball rolling, so it might as well be us”.

The couple who have been together for 10 years, wanted a wedding without too much fuss.

“I wouldn’t do it if there was going to be a big fuss over it. There was no fancy clothing or anything like that,” Ms Bowers said.

There would be no changing of surnames, though.

“I’ve spent a lot of time building up this brand. You don’t go changing that just for a bloke,” Ms Bowers said.

The couple were married by Ms Bowers’ aunt, Jane [Joan] Cockburn, on what Mr McGregor called “a beautiful autumn day”. A jovial Mr McGregor today said it had gone as planned, with no guests suspecting the imminent exchange of vows.

Relations may, as a result, warm between the councils, but Mr McGregor is quick to state there “won’t be any pillow talk”.

The couple don’t have honeymoon plans at this stage.
