Ballot farm clocks up 100 years

The Elliott family, who farm at Tahara in Mangatahi, recently celebrated their 100 year anniversary on the land.

Robert Elliott acquired the land in March 1907 as a ballot farm.

Since then his son Robert Elliott junior, or Bob as he is known, has farmed on the property, followed by his son, David.

David is currently farming the 315ha sheep and beef property. He fattens lambs and cattle, and breeds his own replacement lambs.

David hopes his son Brandon, 14, a student at Lindesfarne [Lindisfarne] College in Hastings, will follow in his footsteps and become the fourth generation of Elliott men to farm Tahara.
