Newspaper Article 2008 – Race out to Waiwhare

Race out to Waiwhare

WEATHER permitting (and these days it’s hard to know) Saturday, February 16, from 9am is the Waiwhare Sports Day, located on the corner of Taihape and River Roads at the Waiwhare Station.

Judging by the programme, it is going to be a fun-filled and entertaining day for the whole family.  Horse events, motorbikes, four wheelers, push bikes and good old-fashioned running races are just some of the activities.

From the youngest competitiors [competitors] through all age groups, if you want to participate you can, or if you prefer to watch the choice is yours.

As in all community days, the horse events are always well attended, and competition rife.  Barrel racing, cross country, bending and turning, egg and spoon race (now that’s not easy on a horse!), jumping at all levels from kindergarten through to adults, and the shepherd’s hack, to name just a few of the races for the day.

After lunch, at 12.30pm, is the sheep racing, where you can back your favourite with equaliser betting.  I’m more than a little curious as to what they will chase myself.

During the day will be events such as the coconut shy, nail driving, water slide, gumboot throw, rolling pin throw (always popular with the ladies!), lucky spot, lolly guessing and much, much more.

The cake stall and face painting will be provided by the Otamauri Playcentre, plus a barbecue lunch and drinks will be provided courtesy of Sherenden and Districts School.

Rounding off the day nicely will be prize giving followed by a few tales told over quiet drinks at the Waiwhare Community Centre.

The entry fee is $5 per car.

The committee has also given two alternative dates in case of postponement – Sunday, February 17 or Saturday, March 8.  If in any doubt, listen to Classic Hits 89.5FM or More FM92.7.

Mark your calendar and take the kids for a great day in the country.  For more information contact Suz Bremner on (06) 874 2744.
