Hastings’s newest green space is a pocket-sized park among the hubbub of CHB activity.

A small green space that former mayor, the late Jeremy Dwyer would have been delighted with.

The first green oasis is called Landmarks Square a small crowd were treated to complimentary espresso coffee and French patisserie treats at the official opening on Monday, May 2.

“It’s just wonderful, it’s the start of some of the things Jeremy would love to have seen in the city, says Marilyn Dwyer-Longley.

Mayor Lawrence Yule said in his speech that the new park opening is an important moment and “it looks particularly stunning.”

‘It’s just wonderful, it’s the start of some of the things Jeremy would love to have seen in the city.’

The Landmarks group has made a huge difference in Hastings and Jeremy’s input made a fundamental difference to what we do in the city in terms of looking after our heritage architecture, landscape, and art in public places – it flows through all our thinking and planning.”

The park features an interpretation board and a striking corten steel pergola featuring a grape-leaf relief panel which casts shadows on the wall.

Landscape architect Philip Henderson worked with Willie Jamieson and Riks Terstappen on the design.

Cynthia Bowyer [Bowers] has been involved with Landmarks since 1998 when Jeremy Dwyer bought forward ideas and a vision to enhance Hastings city.

“It’s magnificent,” she says.

Funding for this park, the first of several, comes from the sale of Nelson Park.
