Tale of epic shearing days

Book launch at historlc Maraekakaho woolshed

The historic Maraekakaho woolshed was an appropriate venue for the launch of author and researcher Alan Scarfe’s book A Changing Land.

The point was noted at the launch on September 29 by Hamilton Logan who said it was possibly the most photographed or “painted” building in rural Hawkes Bay.

But he wondered if many had been in the building, which was completed in 1883, and became a series of stories of epic shearing days, with up to 28 stands in work at the same time.

Mr Logan says that the book tells the story of the station, the vast land holdings developed throughout the 1800s by Donald McLean and son Douglas, and bickering in the family.

At the launch was Hawke’s Bay Today photographer Warren Buckland.
