In loving memory of Rosscoe Hone Browne
14 December 1952-2 January 2014
By Huriana Lawrence, on behalf of the Maraenui & Districts Māori Committee
ROSSCOE is of Tūhoe and Ngāti Porourangi decent.
Rosscoe is remembered for the promotion of organic gardening and taxi driving. He promoted the “Ka pai te Kai Programme” in Maraenui which encouraged whānau to grow their own kai and feed their families by establishing backyard raised bed gardens. The programme was a joint venture with Te Whakaritorito Trust and Te Whare Awhina Foundation whose gardens and nursery supplied seedlings.
Local schools and other organisations also benefitted from this programme. It led to the establishment of the Pukemokimoki Marae raised garden beds where Rosscoe taught a group of rangatahi in conjunction with PGG Wrightson Training ITO.
Rosscoe also headed the Maraenui & Districts Māori Committee, responsible for appointing Māori Wardens. He was a major contributor to Te Taiwhenua ō Whanganui a Orotu Incorporated, supporting urban Māori, taking over from the late Rev. Dan Wakefield JP.
In 2011 he received the Napier Pilot City Award for his outstanding contribution to the community of Napier. This also acknowledged his years of hard work dedicated to those who were less fortunate. His dedication to helping people saw him “walk his talk” and give his aroha to all.
We farewell Rosscoe, his heart felt song says, “to you, my darlings, my greetings, no matter where you go I will follow close behind, my love will remain firm,” (from waiata E Ipo).
Haere! Haere! Haere!
