£400 RAISED IN HASTINGS POPULAR-GIRL CONTEST
Miss Doris Torbett, a member of Convent Old Girls’ A team won the “popular-girl contest” organised by the Hastings Basketball Association to raise funds to send the Hawke’s Bay representative team to the national tournament in Invercargill. The total of £400 raised during the contest was announced at a dance in the Assembly Hall on Saturday evening.
Each team in the 13 clubs in the association had a candidate, and the team raising most money was entitled to have its candidate represent the club at the finals.
On Saturday night, accompanied by two girls in club uniform, each popular girl walked down the hall to take her place on the stage. The last girl to enter was the winner, Miss Torbett. Results were given by the president, Mrs. E. Marshall, and prizes were presented by the Hawke’s Bay Basketball Association president, Mrs. E. S. Craven. Miss Torbett received a £5.5.0 order.
About 400 dancers attended. The hall had been decorated by the Popular-Girl Contest Committee, with greenery and the association colours, black and gold. Music was played by Ces. Williams’ Orchestra.

Huais [Huias], £10/19/6, Havelock North, £10; High School B, £9/19/1, Tuis, £9/7/6; Robins, £8/17/-; Wesley B, £8/12/2; Wrens, £8/9/6; Olympia Red, £7/16/3; Olympic Grey £7/16/3; JLP, £7/12/-; Convent Old Girls (2), £7/10/-; Watties, £7/10/-; Convent High School (2 teams), £15/l/6; Haumoana (2 teams), £14/10/-. Fifty pounds will be returned to clubs as rebate.
