A blooming wonder

Grove Rd, Hastings, resident Loma Ward shows an “abnormal” lily that has suddenly blossomed in her back garden.

Mrs Ward said the 1.2-metre (4 foot) high lily started blooming three days ago and the abundance of buds on the plant was restricting more blooms from opening.

The unusually wide stem gives the appearance of four or five stems joining together to form the enlarged flower base.

Mrs Ward said the lily had been transplanted a few times in various locations. “It’s had a very chequered history,” she said.

It was unusual for the plant to bloom in such abundance. “It’s not supposed to be like this at all.”

A garden expert had suggested a viral infection might have affected the plant, but more information would be available when the bulb was uncovered or if it failed to bloom next year.
