HAWKE’S BAY. v. POVERTY BAY
The above match was played at Gisborne last Saturday, in the presence of Lord Jellicoe and a large attendance. Poverty Bay won the toss, and decided to play with the wind and the sun behind them. The Governor-General kicked off, and the locals were soon on the attack, Stickland making some very fine saves. The game was fast, each side indulging in long passing. The ball travelled up and down the field at a terrific pace, McMillan putting in some fine work and breaking up the attack, but failing to place the ball nicely to his forward line. During the second spell Hawke’s Bay were continually pressing, the local goal having some very narrow escapes, one shot skirting off the goal posts. A long shot by Henderson, centre-half being mulled by the local goalie, was to the appearance of the onlookers a goal. Finding the value of Evans, he was given more work to do, his centres, calling forth tremendous applause. Two corners placed by Evans looked almost a moral for scoring, but in the melee the locals managed to clear.
For Hawke’s Bay Stickland proved a tower of strength, giving a fine display of goal-keeping. Evans made one think of the play witnessed in the Second Division League matches at Home. Of the Hawke’s Bay defence Campbell (back) and Henderson (centre-half) played very fine games. Poverty Bay’s defence was very solid.
Mr Clements licensee of the Coronation Hotel, Gisborne, ex-[tended great] hospitality to the team.
[David Evans, father of Lorna Ward]
