Author recognised

Author Sylvia Ashton-Warner, who wrote in a preface to her autobiography that she had been rejected by her country, has been awarded the MBE.

Her first three books were written while teaching at Fernhill School, where she practised the teaching techniques which were to bring her into conflict with the educational authorities.

Her first book “Spinster,” which became a best-seller in the United States and later a film, was published in 1959.

It was followed by the controversial “Incense To Idols” in 1960 and “Teacher” in 1963.

She had also previously taught at Te Pohue.
