Ball of Cricket Match
In the most thrilling finish on record in the School v. College cricket series, Christ’s College won the annual match against Christchurch Boys’ High School yesterday by securing the last of their opponents’ wickets with the last ball right on time.
A large crowd of enthusiasts watched the deciding stages of play on the College ground. It was the first win gained by College over School since 1939. They were 107 runs ahead.
Christ’s College had established a lead of 38 runs on the first innings, and, with a much improved batting performance, were able to declare their second innings closed with 254 up for seven (Beadel 95, Allan 60, Crowe 32).
Boys’ High School thus went to the crease again before three O’clock, requiring 292 to avoid outright defeat. Against accurate and well-varied bowling by Gibson, Newbegin [Newbigin], and Lester, they lost the first three wickets for 33. Then came a temporary check to College hopes. Lawson, an accomplished young bat, and McKeown, going along steadily, carried the total to 94, when McKeown lost his wicket lbw for 25. Next Penrose helped Lawson to build on another valuable 54 runs before Penrose (22) fell to a wonderful slip catch by Newbegin. Five for 148.
More Smart Fielding
Gibson took a magnificent catch low down off his own bowling to dispose of Lawson, who had compiled 88, much of it with glorious shots off the back foot. This meant six for 168. With eight down for 176, the time was twelve minutes to six. It was a race against the clock for now for both teams, and the tension communicated itself to the crowd.
With a few minutes to go, Duncan was neatly caught behind the stumps by Lowry, who had previously stumped Duckmanton. Nine down for 184.
Anderson joined Dalley, hoping to play out of time, but, after Dalley had added one run, Anderson faced the pace bowler, Newbegin, and was out, clean bowled, off the final ball of the match just as six o’clock was striking in the city. The total was 185, and Christ’s College had won outright by 107 runs, a well-deserved tributed, and no one more than the fieldsmen. Newbegin took five for 30 in the first innings, and five for 44 in this.
The best School bowler for the match was Duckmanton, the off-break bowler. His figures were five for 10 and five for 45.

FIRST WIN FOR TEN YEARS
CHRIST’S COLLEGE had its first win for ten years over its number one cricket rival, Christchurch Boy’s High School, this year. The match finished, in true story-book style, a few minutes before time on the second day, the last school batsman being bowled with the last ball of the last over. College’s superiority was in its bowling. E.J.D. Newbegin, a right-hander, who bowls very fast for a schoolboy, took 10 for 77 in the two innings. Top scorers were G.C.P. Beadel (College), with 95, and J.D. Lawson (School) 88.
