CHB help for orchards urged

Hatuma farmer Atholl Kirk wants the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council to offer assistance to Hastings orchardists whose crops were destroyed in the March 2 hailstorm.

Mr Kirk said today, that the council had been asking ratepayers for suggestions about what to do with more than $500,000 it had gathered from asset sales.

“Why don’t they make it available, interest-free, to these orchardists for a period of five years?” he said today.

Mr Kirk said he had not discussed the idea with the council, but he hoped other ratepayers would pick up on it and support him.

“This has been a real disaster for these people and if we have the ability to be able to assist them we should do it,” Mr Kirk said.

“If we made this money available byway of interest- free loans then they could get the benefit and we would still have the asset to use in five years.”
