Hawke’s Bay Play Well in National Basketball Tourney
AUCKLAND. August 26 (P.A.). –
Players and spectators at the national women’s basketball tournament, which began today at Windmill Road, quietly crowded round the No. 1 court as the final bell sounded in the match between Auckland and Hawke’s Bay. There was complete silence as a Hawke’s Bay forward, awarded a penalty in the last minute, goaled cleanly and brought her team level with Auckland 17-all. As Auckland were runners-up for the New Zealand title at last year’s championships, the draw achieved by Hawke’s Bay was a notable performance.
In the Hawke’s Bay-Auckland match the southern team established an early lead by profiting from Auckland’s mistakes. In the second spell Auckland rallied and after whirlwind play was leading 17-16. Then came the penalty at full-time.
Wellington led all the way against Otago and, though the last few minutes were tense, won 21-19. R. Corbett, the Wellington centre, proved elusive and P. Fletcher, in the forward zone, excelled with accurate shooting. Clever interceptions by C. Hill put Otago on the attack in the second spell and T. Allen and R. Goodson shot precisely to bring the score to 20-19. Then Wellington goaled right on time.
Canterbury proved too sound for Manawatu and few goaling opportunities were lost by A. Hughes. A. Clark and J. Murray.
Auckland beat Wanganui with a last minute burst 21-17.
