HB basketball reps. retain Rosenbrook Cup

The Hawke’s Bay basketball representatives retained the Rosenbrook trophy at the annual tournament held at Palmerston North on Saturday. The Bay team went through their three matches undefeated.

The tournament was played in bitterly cold weather, with heavy rain – something unusual for the Hawke’s Bay players, yet they managed to overcome these unusual conditions exceptionally well.

In all their three games Hawke’s Bay showed promise and despite the conditions they turned on some bright moments. They were successful in beating Manawatu 11-7, Wanganui 17-8 and then Wellington 12-8.

That the scoring was low was only to be expected, but in all three games there was sound positional play revealed, with solid defensive play featuring all of them.

For Hawke’s Bay, two forwards, N. Erceg and D. Avison, showed rare understanding in cutting through the defence. The Bay centre, J. Powell, was a tower of strength to her side in the centre court, and particularly round the circle, where she made many fine interceptions.

Other games in the tournament resulted: Wanganui 9 v. Manawatu 17; Wellington 11 v. Wanganui 22; Manawatu 14 v. Wellington 14.
