MARAENUI LADIES’ OPEN TITLE WON BY MISS J. SMITH

The Maraenui Ladies’ Golf Club’s open championship tournament was concluded yesterday afternoon when the title went to the Napier player, Miss J. Smith, who defeated Mrs. G. Chapman in the final.  There was a big following for the final, but it failed to produce the best golf of the tournament.

Both finalists were driving splendidly but their approaches and putting showed how tense was the struggle.  Both missed opportunities around the greens.  Miss Smith secured an early lead and managed to hold this in a keen match, finally winning 3 up and two to play.
