Mary questions left unanswered

Mary, the red corrugated iron shed referred to by H M Cameron in her letter of February 27 now resides in my garden.

Years ago when the telephone line that serviced the transmission line marching from the substation at Fernhill across our property was redundant, the poles were offered to the landowners.

My immediate response was, “Yes thanks, but what is happening to Mary?” as the hut had reposed outside our road fence as long as I could remember, and was quite a landmark.

“Take her,” was the response, so immediately tractor, trailer and two brawny men were dispatched to bring to bring Mary.

The door and sign was replaced but despite good intentions I’ve never got round to replacing the name.

There were several little red sheds around the countryside.

I wonder if they are all ending their days in a local garden.

Perhaps there is someone out there that knows their exact function, it would be interesting to know.
