MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
MR H.P. HORNE RE-ELECTED MAYOR
The election of Mayor and Councillors for the Borough of Woodville took place on Wednesday. There was a fairly heavy poll, and the result was announced by the returning Officer (Mr Keay) about 8 o’clock, as follows:-
H.P. Horne 213
F. Shearman 110
Councillors (nine)
Johnston 269
Ruddick 268
Pickering 253
Harding 252
Sutton 220
Rose 205
Nicholas 198
Mackie 190
McCormick 184
Morris 163
King 117
Walker 107
As soon as the announcement had been made the Mayor (Mr H. P. Horne) came forward and was given an ovation by the large crowd that had assembled. He stated that he felt proud and pleased that the electors had expressed renewed confidence in him. He had occupied the Mayoral chair for 15 years, and had always striven to perform his duties in an impartial manner. He had invited a contest because he felt that there had been a difference of opinion over certain measures taken by the Council. The verdict at the poll had been a vindication of the action of the Council, and he naturally felt pleased that this was so. He would continue to devote his best energies to advancing the interests of the town in which he had lived all his life. After referring to the different works undertaken by the Council and to the signs of progress that were at present in evidence, Mr Horne paid a warm tribute to the town clerk (Mr Keay) and the borough staff, and expressed the hope that during the two years of their office the new Council would work together for the general good of the borough.
Thanks were also returned in a suitable, and sometimes humourous manner, by Councillors Johnston, Harding, Pickering, Sutton, Rose, Nicholas, and McCormick. Apologies were made on behalf of Crs Ruddick and Mackie, who were unavoidably out of town.
