NEW APPLES WIN FAVOUR

Looking pleased with the new varieties of red apples being bred at the DSIR research orchard at Havelock North are Mrs Gwen Dorward, left, and Mrs Marion Kiddle, wife of Mr Ken Kiddle, chairman of the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board.

A final selection of the new varieties has now been made and planting material will soon be propagated for the purpose of commercial testing of the apples.

In the background is a chart which provides information of the different apple breeding programmes being conducted at the research orchard.

Head of the project is Dr Don McKenzie.
