NO SURPRISES IN SECOND SERIES OF CLUB GAMES

Fine weather prevailed for the second series of games in intertown hockey on Saturday. Grounds in Napier were fast but the condition of the grounds in Hastings was not conducive to good hockey. There were no major upsets in either the senior grades.

Pirates, who played with only seven men, held Karori almost up to full time. Players who stood out in this game were W. Taylor and Shipman for Pirates and C. Cassin for Karori.

Akina Rovers, who played in Napier, used the short crisp passes to their advantage in beating a strong Kiwi side. This game was perhaps the best of the season so far. Players worthy of mention were for Akina Rovers L. Totty for his outstanding display as fullback, B. Murdoch for his two smart goals through following up and N. Harris for his solid work in the halves. For Kiwi, V. McCutcheon was always a tower of strength to his side and J. McMahon was solid in his defence in the halves.

In the women’s section Matariki again proved too strong for the opposition, beating Kahuranaki by the good margin of four-nil.

In the game between Karori and Y.M.P. hockey was seen at its best, particularly in the Karori team whose combination proved superior to that of Y.M.P. One Karori player worth mentioning was N. Evans who played a grand forward game.
