ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

Hastings Society’s Function

POPULAR PROGRAMME

The soloists at the Hastings Orchestral Society’s concert on Tuesday next are sure to prove popular with the audience. Miss O’Dowd, of Napier, has a charming contralto voice, which music lovers of Hastings are keen to hear in specially selected numbers. Mr W. Brough is a newcomer to the town and has a fine bass voice, which will be heard to advantage in “Will o’ the Wisp” (Cherry) and “Ever Bravest Hearts” (Gounod).

The following programme will be performed by the orchestra:-

Overture, “Egmont” (Beethoven). This splendid overture was written, along with other incidental music, for Goethe’s drama dealing with the life and tragic death of Count Egmont. The “Egmont” overture portrays the hero’s death and the consequent freedom of the people.

Three movements from the “Water Music” (Handel), Lento, Andante, Allegro Viva. Air for strings and pianoforte (The manner in which this composition came to be written has already been explained).

Symphony in B Flat Major (Hayden), Largo, Allegro Vivace, Adagio, Minuetto, Presto. This symphony is one of the lesser known of the 188 produced by this remarkably fluent and prolific composer. Although not ranking with the twelve symphonies composed for London (Known as the “Solomon Set”), there is a freshness and spontaneity about the various themes which cannot fail to give pleasure to the hearer. The slow movement is particularly beautiful, and the Minuetto very characteristic of the genial old master.

Selection “Floradora” (Leslie Stewart). The following numbers are introduced:- “Come and See Our Island,” “Silver Star of Love,” “Galloping,” “Phrenology,” “The Fellow Who Might,” “When an Interfering Person,” “Tell Me, Pretty Maiden,” “The Millionaire,” “I’ve an Inkling,” “Shade of the Palms,” “Finale of Act I.”

Waltz, “Blue Danube” (Strauss). The composer of the matchless waltzes, of which the above is beyond doubt the favourite, has a statue erected to his memory in Vienna.

Selection, “Chu Chin Chow.” The following numbers are included: “Chu Chow’s Entrance,” “Cleopatra’s Nile,” Javanese Dance,” “Any Time’s Kissing Time,” “Mahbubah,” “Cobbler’s Song,” Corraline,” Robbers’ Chorus,” “The Scimitar,” “I’ll Sing and Dance.”
