Pakeke Lions win trophy

AT the recent District 202B Lions International Convention at Hastings, District Governor Russell Hughes awarded Waipukurau Pakeke Lions Club the Bill Ashdown Trophy.

In making the presentation District Governor Russell commented that the Club of 34 members with an average age of 76 years has to be admired for the many activities they get involved with to support of elderly people within the Central Hawke’s Bay community.

Amongst the activities are driving the bus for the elderly every week taking them to and from the hospital, clearing sections, hedges etc, for widows, which are day-to-day operations.

But the most rewarding project was the installation of smoke detectors in all club member’s home which led to the members installing at a greatly reduced cost smoke detectors in a further 40 other homes of elderly people.

President Charlie Anderton, Waipukurau Pakeke Lions in accepting the Award made reference to the support the club and members receive from the public when projects to raise funds are held.

This year the club’s financial donations will exceed $5,000, mainly to local organisations but also to national appeals and Lions International appeals, such as the Auckland Liver Transplant Centre and Ozanam House, Palmerston North.
