Rowing at Clive tomorrow
With the New Zealand rowing championships in just over two weeks’ time, crews taking part in the Hawke’s Bay regatta tomorrow will be approaching the peak of their training and should provide some keenly-contested races.
The river at Clive is an ideal setting for a regatta, with a straight 2000-metre course, flat water conditions and the races finishing opposite Farndon Park, at Clive where spectators can get at grand view
The Hawke’s Bay regatta is, now established as one of the major regattas for North island crews, and this year has drawn entries from 11 different clubs from the Wellington, Auckland, Wanganui and East Coast areas.
Many of the crews taking part are strong contenders for National honours, but main interest locally will be in the form of A. Bone, the leading: Hawke’s Bay sculler, who since the retirement at J. Hill New Zealand and Empire champion, must now be considered a likely contender for the vacant title.
Tony Bone had an easy win at the Wellington regatta two weeks ago, when he led home a field of 10 to win the Pearce Cup.
The most spectacular race of the day is likely to be the maiden eight with a capacity field of nine crews.
Hawke’s Bay Club will be represented by a crew from the Napier Boys’ High School, who are preparing for the Maadi Cup to he raced between New Zealand secondary school crews at Karapiro at Easter.
There are quite a few former New Zealand representatives and New Zealand title-holders among the oarsmen taking part in the regatta and the standard of rowing should be the highest ever seen in Hawke’s Bay.
