THREE H.B. PLAYERS NOMINATED FOR SHIELD TRIAL GAME
Three Hawke’s Bay cricketers have been nominated by Mr. D. Pirie, Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association selector, for selection in the Central District’s Plunket Shield trial match at Wanganui next month. They are T. P. L. Reaney, Napier H.S.O.B., C. B. Satterthwaite, Old Boys – Hastings and L. Totty, Whakatu-Mahora.
Reaney is a former Wellington shield player, and is easily the most experienced of the three nominees. He has been Hawke’s Bay leading player for more than a decade.
Satterthwaite is a newcomer to Hawke’s Bay. He came from Christchurch last year and though he only occasionally played cricket last season he impressed as a real stylist. This season he has been playing steadily and when he gets going at the wicket, he displays a beautiful range of strokes. Satterthwaite received early coaching under Jim Parks when the latter was engaged by the Canterbury Association. He played for Canterbury Colts.
Totty is a product of Hastings High School and his real worth lies in his bowling. This season he has been bowling particularly well in club games. He can turn the ball either way, and given a wicket favourable to him he can produce a surprisingly big break. His “wrong un” is a ball that has a top-spin and shoots off the wicket. Competent critics differ on his development, there being some who favour him speeding-up delivery, while others contend, he would be well advised to develop as a leg spinner.
The trial match will be held on December 8 and 9, districts represented being Wairarapa, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui, Taranaki, Southern Hawke’s Bay, Rangitikei, Nelson and Marlborough.
Selectors are Messrs. A. M. Ongley (Manawatu), R. E. Frater (Nelson), and E. C. Gee (Wanganui). – “Mid-Off.”
