Top exhibitors both 100 years
Two firms celebrating their centenaries this year presented the best two trade exhibits at the Hawke’s Bay Spring Show.
The senior judge, Mr Colin Blackmore, said there was no doubt that the display of Nelson (NZ) Ltd – the Tomoana freezing works’ owner – was outstanding.
The Nelsons display, which represents a Hastings street in 1880, won the Charles Douglas Memorial Cup for the best exhibit overall.
The second-best display overall was entered by Williams and Kettle.
“The work put must have been tremendous,” Mr Blackmore said.
“It was extremely well thought out.”
Mr Blackmore said the judges’ decision was unanimous.
He described the Nelsons display as a nostalgic exhibit reflecting the early days of the company.
Mr Blackmore said a genuine touch was added with some of the exhibitors in the Nelsons tent dressed in 19th-century costume.
The Williams and Kettles display impressed the judges with its comprehensive coverage of all the company’s services, and especially with the presentation of a new facet of farming in a rabbit display.
Mr Blackmore said that the standard of displays was uniformly high.
“We felt that many displays that we did not give placings to were almost up to the standard of those that were placed,” he said.
The judges looked for innovative ideas connected with the show theme, and well-presented exhibits.
As well as the competition for the best exhibit overall, displays were judged in three separate sections.
