Wants more use made of the showgrounds

The Hawke’s Bay A and P Society wants more organisations to make use of the Tomoana Showgrounds.

In his annual report to the society yesterday, retiring president Mr E. W. White said inflation and maintenance costs made it necessary to generate more income through the rental of the showgrounds.

Mr White said income from the use of the showgrounds during the year nearly doubled and could be increased even more if the society was willing to make improvements.

He suggested upgrading toilets and improving acoustics in the grandstand.

The society was prepared to offer a fair and reasonable rental to any interested organisation, Mr White said.

Society treasurer Mr T. I. Caseley said gifts toward a replacement of Waikoko House, which was burned last August, amounted to $24,729.

The money could only be spent on Waikoko, or else returned to donors. There was no agreement yet on a replacement for Waikoko House.

Mr Caseley said the society budgeted for a $13,000 surplus for the coming financial year.
