A Good Akina Man

Our motto: “AKINA” – AKINA is a word, which the Rangatira (Chief) in a Waka Taua (War Canoe) called to his men when the time had come to make supreme effort and dip their paddles fast. ‘Strike hard’ or “Go hard’ was the meaning. The motto was put to the assembled pupils on 3rd May, 1922, and ‘Akina’ was adopted unanimously. As a school we have adopted this motto to mean “strive hard” in the academic, sporting, cultural and community areas of life.
