Dear Mr Smithard,
In the 1978 M.A.N.Z. Year Book, I noticed an Award of Merit, made by M.A.N.Z. to those people who have made an outstanding contribution to Motorsport. With this in mind, I would like to nominate a life member of our Club for the above award, on behalf of the Hawkes Bay Car Club Inc.
History MRS AUDREY [AUDREE] CURTIS first joined our Club in 1951, and immediately became an active competitor and organiser. In the mid 1950’s she joined the Committee. From then on, both Mr and Mrs Curtis became leading organisers and fund raisers in establishing the Club with its present Club facilities. In 1963 Mrs Curtis was the Club’s Womens Champion. From 1972 to 1978 Mrs Curtis has held the office of Club President and at the 1978 Annual General Meeting was elected as Patron of the Club.
At all times, Mrs Curtis has always been mindfull of the Club’s public image. Annually, she has organised a Trial for Crippled children and arranged for the less fortunate people in our community to enjoy motoring activities.
Since the advent of Rallying in New Zealand, and in particular the International series, Mrs Curtis has been a Stage Manager or Park Ferme Controller when ever a rally has been in the Club’s area. In recent times, the Club has celebrated its 25th and 30th Anniversaries. Mrs Curtis on both occasions, was the key organiser and by these events has helped gain valuable publicity for Motor Sport throughout Hawkes Bay.
The above outline of her activities is only in brief, but I feel it shows how involved and active she has been over the past 28 years. Motorsport has been her life and without a doubt, the Hawkes Bay Car Club would not be what it is today if it had not been for Mrs Curtis.
On behalf of the Club and Committee, I would appreciate your most earnest consideration of the nomination. We feel that her activities in Motorsport have been so unselfish that we would like to recognise her work.
