To Dick

When I was a lad & times they were hard
My Father looked at me and said
I can not look after you, you’ll have to go
To a home where they will give you a bed
With eyes that were streaming I packed up my case
And I cried all the way to the home
Where I met & [an] old Lady with silvery hair who said
Enough of that boy, come along
As I stood in the lounge with a heart full of fear
As I gazed up at all of those boys
A young lad stepped forward & offered his hand
He said I’ll take good care of you boy
Well a love it was kindled on that precious day
Which has lasted now 50 odd years
As a friend ship so treasured it has lasted the time
Through hard ship, through joy & through tears
As I think of the friends he has made in his time
And the boys he has met through the years
With his jokes & his laughter well [we’ll] never forget
As he would have us all doubled up in tears
It dosnt [doesn’t] seem fair that he had to go in this way
When he was in the prime of his life
To leave us all grieving & feeling this way
And to leave behind his loving wife
Well Eric old son your time has come too
I shudder to think of the pain you’ve gone through
And from all those who love you with that burning desire
Well [We’ll] miss you like hell
O great balls of fire
