Born Auckland 16 September 1916. Married 1958 Patricia Mary Williams; two children – Helen Jean Lucy (b […]), Robin Athol (b […][…]).
Educated Auckland University College 1934, 1945 – Bachelor of Arts (NZ); Massey Agricultural College 1935-39 – Master of Agricultural Science (NZ); Oxford University 1946-48 – DPhil. DSc (honoris causa), Massey University 1977.
Formerly director Commodities and Trade Division, FAO, Rome 1964-70, assistant director general 1970-76, senior research fellow Massey University 1977-80, director Centre for Agricultural Policy Studies, Massey University 1981-84.
Publications include Agriculture and Economic Progress (London: Oxford University Press, 1952), New Zealand in the Future World Food Economy (Massey University, 1980), Trade and Dependence in the Pacific Basin with A.N. Rae (Massey University, 1983).
Awarded QSO 1986, Sir Geoffrey Peren Award 1988 as a distinguished alumnus of Massey University.
Represented Massey University at hockey 1935-37.
Leisure activities include bowls, reading, clarinet.
