The Secretary,
Hastings Rotary Club,
P.O. Box 752,
HASTINGS.

Dear Sir,

May I draw to the attention of your Club and in particular its Directorate, the existence and objects of the Hawkes Bay Ophthalmic Trust.  This Trust was formed in 1973 under the auspices of the Napier Scinde Lions Club following the successful appeal conducted by that Club in conjunction with the Hawkes Bay Chinese Community which resulted in the Eye Camera being presented to the Napier Public Hospital.  There were surplus funds available and a donation from the Napier Scinde Lions Club made these funds up to the sum of $1000.00 which was presented to the trustees to form the Trust.

Since that time, the Trust has been instrumental in obtaining a direct donation which has resulted in a light coagulator costing over $5300.00 (even after waiver of duty and sales tax) being presented to the Eye Ward at the Napier Public Hospital.  In addition the Trust has received many donations from the Public generally.

More recently the Trust has received a further donation of $500.00 from the Napier Scinde Lions Club, a donation of $500.00 from the Taradale Lions Club, and a promise of the net proceeds of a whopper-swopper project (possibly as much as $1700.00 but definitely a minimum of $500.00) from the Napier Lions Club.

The Trust has been formed to serve the whole of Hawkes Bay and the trustees are hopeful that it will receive support throughout the whole of Hawkes Bay from the public generally and in particular from service clubs.

At a recent meeting of Trustees it was resolved to use some of the funds in hand to assist in the training of staff engaged in ophthalmic work at the public hospitals by sending the ophthalmic Theatre Sister and the Ophthalmic Photographer for study courses at leading Eye Hospitals in Australia during this coming year.  Other projects for staff training and purchase of equipment are under consideration.

If your board would like one of the Trustees and / or one of the Ophthalmic Surgeons in Hawkes Bay to attend a meeting to address your Club on the objects and achievements of the Trust, we would be happy to make suitable arrangements.

If further information is required, please do not hesitate to contact any one of the Trustees.

Yours faithfully,
GR Cowley
Trustee
