Fellow, Institute of Directors 1972, Fellow Institute of Transport 1972. Royal New Zealand Navy, radar, gunnery; served with the Eastern Fleet and in Mediterranean, 1940-45. Hawke’s Bay Motor Company 1935-40; Managing Director, R H Pettigrew Transport Ltd, Napier (Allied Freightways Ltd 1964, Freightways Holdings Ltd 1969) 1946-85 (retired); Life Member, NZ Transport Association, 1981; Former Director: NZ Forest Products Ltd (and Deputy Chairman), NZ Maritime Holdings Ltd; Current Director: Union Steam Ship Co Ltd, Auckland; Current Chairman Chep Handling Systems, Auckland; operates  Polled Hereford Stud, Hawke’s Bay.
Sports: Rugby: President Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union 1981, President of New Zealand Rugby Union Federation of New Zealand 1986-. Recreations: racing horses, rugby, boating.
